My grade 3 mathematicians have a few new strategies and skills in their tool kit… they are learning all about multiplication! This year, we look critically about what multiplication actually means and different strategies to represent it in order to solve and create story problems up to 5 x 5.
I absolutely LOVE teaching this unit because it’s a brand-new concept for students in their grade 3 year. It has been my experience that they feel so empowered and excited when we learn how to multiply numbers! We started with looking at equal groups, which is what multiplying really means, repeated addition, arrays, and related multiplication sentences.
Grade 3′s, which strategies do you like to use when you’re multiplying? Can you tell me about the x 1 rule? How about the x 0 rule?
Happy Multiplying! I look forward to the next half of this unit, as we move into division next week.

I have lots of fun doing array’s.Because there easy to do.Sometimes hard. Most of time very easy.I had lot’s of fun when we were doing the array’s.
The 1 x rule is anything 1 x is that number. for instance 4×1=4 or 9×1=9. The 0 x rule is anything 0 x is 0. for instance 90×0=0 or 100000×0=0.
I love doing array’s because they are fun and sometime’s hard and easy to. We only go up to 5×5 It Is easy doing that one.
Doing the arrays in multiplacation was SO fun even though we only went up to 5×5. It was still fun becaause multiplying is so easy!
The x1 rule is the answer is the same as the first number. I will prove it 6×1=6.
I agree with alexy it can be hard ,but you will get through it with a great teacher like mrs. cameron
doing multiplacation and devision is so fun and sometimes hard. Arays are fun to make too.
We know how to divide too! My favourite division strategy is working backwards. Whenever you times something by 0 it will equal 0. Whenever you times something by 1 it is itself.
I like multiplication more then i like division.
I hop you like multiplying is’s fun. I hop multiplying is easy for you. I love multiplying.
Here is an example of my strategay: 2X3=?
The 2 means how many groups you need; so I would make 2 groups of blocks. The 3 means how many blocks you need in each group; so I would put 3 blocks in each group. Then you count all the block; I got 6. So 2X3=6.
If you times (X) any number by 1, the answer will be the same number.
If you times (X) any number by 0, the answer will always be 0.
My favourite strategy most of the time is using Equal Group.
The x 1 rule means if you x 1 any number it will be the same number. The x 0 rule means if you times 0 it will be 0.
It was veary fun an easy. We meay go up to 5×5 but 6×2=12
multpling is easy, fun and cool 5×5=25. isn’t that easy?
This unit is fun so far. I am very happy I learned this math!!!
Good job girls! Keep learning and keep up the good work x
Multiplication x 0 is magic. 0 times 7392 equals 0 and the same with 1. 1 times 71253 equls 71253.
